The Metal Oxide Semi-Conductor comes with a little Silica chip that interacts with carbon monoxide in the atmosphere and that causes a drop in current flow through the silica chip. It works just the way Ionization detectors work and when the voltage drops, an alarm will be sounded.
The electro-chemical smoke detectors are the most sensitive smoke detectors around. They do have electrodes that are connected to chemical baths and there is a rapid transfer of ions among the electrodes when smoke is detected, this will result in the sounding of an alarm. Electro-chemical smoke detectors are more common in industrial applications.
